Activate Maternity Leave

Time off work can be more than time with a new baby. A maternity leave can be used to develop a career, as well as a new mind. Entrepreneurialism is a popular choice for many new moms, but education can also activate a maternity leave.

For accountants this is a perfect time to pursue qualifications with ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants). This body has a solid reputation and would give any potential candidates good standing during a job search.

Those with more legal-minded brains could consider becoming a charted secretary or administrator through ICSA, a UK based organization. Remember that a corporate secretary is different from an administrative assistant. People with these positions will do things such as setting up agendas, producing and distributing reports and analysis to Board members before the meetings.

Anyone can follow the ICSA training program, although prior qualifications in certain fields allow for exemptions. Becoming an ICSA member has the potential to increase a salary by 20% in Luxembourg, where there are a limited number of people who have this qualification. One can also get involved locally through the Institut Luxembourgeois des Administrateurs (www.ila.lu).
